The First Bare to Make 2 Million!

Congratulations to Gregg Thurlbeck, as he becomes the FIRST Alderwood swimmer to swim 2 million metres. Gregg scaled back his swimming to part time this past season in order to rest a nagging shoulder injury and provide the team with a coach. He managed to still log thousands and thousands of metres since the last milestone of 1.5 million and this summer, while in the lake at his cottage he past a great big one...2 million metres and counting!. Way to go Gregg !! ___________________________________________________________

A Million Metres - Female

Congratulations to Melissa Nelson for reaching 1 million metres in Masters Swimming Canada’s Million Metre Challenge. Melissa is the third member of the Teddy Bares to reach this plateau. Now it’s on to the one and a half million mark!

Another Bare Makes His Million!

Congratulations to Gregg Thurlbeck, as he becomes the second Alderwood swimmer to pass the ultimate milestone on MSC's web-based "Million Metre Challenge". Gregg has been a Teddy Bare for many years, and diligently keeps track of all his work-outs, both with his team, and in the lake at his cottage. He claims that, as he passed the million mark during a recent cottage swim, he was "cheered on by an entourage of minnows, tadpoles and a pesky deerfly". Although no Teddy Bares were present for the occasion, all our thoughts are with him as we, together, offer him our hardiest congratulations on his latest achievement ! Well done Gregg !!

Mark joins Millionaire’s Club…

Swim caps off to Mark Bonneville for becoming the first Alderwood Teddy Bare to complete the Million Meter Challenge.

When Masters Swimming Canada launched the Million Meter Challenge in the fall of 2005 Mark was among the first Alderwood swimmers to sign up for the initiative. The Challenge was designed as a way for swimmers to keep track of their training distances and it created a number of milestones along the way to the ultimate goal of swimming a million meters. There are awards for reaching 100,000, 250,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000 meters. The Challenge web site, keeps track of each individual swimmer’s entries but also shows how clubs across the country are doing relative to one another.

On several occasions Mark has been among the top 20 swimmers in Canada in terms of total mileage swum in a given month. (Or should that be kilometerage?) And now that he’s reached the Challenge goal of swimming a million meters (1000 kilometers), the question becomes, will he go for 2 million?

So, congratulations Mark! We’ll be looking for your smiling face to be added to the Challenge website soon.
