Of Interest Ken Howlett was awarded the Mountbatten Medal back in 1963 for a very heroic rescue of a 4 year old boy in the dead of winter in Edmonton, Alberta. An absolutely amazing story! One never knows what stories we all have in our histories. To read all about it, click here. Fellow teammate, Bill Johnson won a gold medal and 3 silvers at the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships in May. Click here to view an article written by Iain Colpitts for The Mississauga News. Congratulations Bill!!! Two dates to keep in mind: To close off the competitive season for masters swimming, Ethel St. Laurent attended EOMAC’s long course meet on June 27 where she established or broke another bunch of Alderwood club records. Ethel’s had quite a spectacular year and caps it off with 3 more terrific swims - 200 IM (6:47.12), 50 Fly (2:03.56) and 400 Free (12:04.62). Is it any wonder that Ethel was this year’s winner of the Best Effort Female award? Linda and Doug recently competed in the Orlando 70.3 half triathlon and Doug wrote a little story on the experience. Read the story. Over the May long weekend, while most of us were enjoying tremendous summer weather here in Ontario, a couple of Alderwood Teddy Bares were swimming hard and fast in Nanaimo BC. Over the course of four days of competition at Masters Nationals, Ethel St Laurent and Bill Johnson did our team proud. Both Bill and Ethel managed to claim a pair of club records with their swims. Bill now holds the Alderwood club records for the 80 – 84 year old male 50 Free and 200 Free while Ethel beat her own mark in the 400 Free and managed to surpass Gerda Voss’s record for the 50 Free in the 75- 79 year old female category. Congratulations to Bill and Ethel and thanks for showing Canada what it means to be a Teddy Bare! Both Ethel and Ted set new club records at the Burlington meet, February 2010. Ethel set 2 club records, one for 50 Fly and the other for the 200 IM. Ted set 4 club records, three of which are now Ontario records and one of which is a Canadian record! Congratulations to you both!! Alderwood Teddy Bares Annual Swim Meet 2010 Alderwood Teddy Bares 2010 Meet results Congratulations to all of the Alderwood swimmers who participated in our meet on January 24th. In total 21 club records were either broken or established. And, more impressively, 10 of these were also Ontario records. Bryon Slade started the day off with an impressive Ontario record breaking swim in the 1000 Free. John Monne stepped up with a pair of Breaststroke Ontario records. Gerda Voss got the crowd applauding with her pair of Ontario records in Breaststroke and IM. And, not to be outdone, our founding member Ted Roach posted 5 Ontario records. |
